An initial report by Japanese related to incretin was made by Ohneda in Unger痴 lab, next by Shima in his own lab around 1970. After discovery of gut glucagon, I joined GEP (gastro-entero-pancreatic) hormone study group in which researchers, who are concerned with gut hormone, gathered from every academic field in Japan. This meeting often extended to international-joined symposium. Through tight discussion, many excellent results were obtained such as the naming, secretory products or function of gut endocrine cells and delineation of new hormone system. Pursuing the function of each hormone, GIP and GLP-1 were found to be incretin. Now, GLP-1 has been widely distributed as a drug for type 2 diabetes and will be for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
