Summary
The oral health care service was introduced into the Long- term Care Insurance of Japan in 2006. The purpose is to prevent the elderly people from becoming dependent on long- term care before they reach the state of needing care. The program is made up of 2 pillars which include mouth cleaning and oral functional training. Care workers carry out the service under advices and instructions of dental hygienists, speech therapists or nurses. The effect of the oral health care is not only the prevention for pneumonia but also the improvement in activities of daily living and religion. When the elderly people get eating disorder, they can take dysphagia rehabilitation in the Medical Insurance. We are going to make an effort at encouraging the oral health care to live in comfort for the elderly.
