Summary Systemic aging process is complicated, but has close relationship with aging of the eye. There is a global agreement in the scientific community that calorie restriction can extend the life span of various kinds of animals. Actually calorie restriction partially prevented age-related dry eye by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation of lacrimal gland. Metabolic syndrome has been recognized as one of the main causes of retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy and retinal artery/vein occlusion. Furthermore recent preliminary data suggested that dry eye disease was also related to metabolic syndrome. Adiponectinis decreased in metabolic syndrome, and may improve not only age-related systemic diseases but also age-related eye diseases.Recent advances in aging research opened a new way of intervening with the aging process. In this paper, the relationship between common age-related eye diseases and adiponectin was discussed form the anti-aging point of view.
